The Music
The album Cantando en la Ciudad de los Ángeles: Christmas Villancicos by Gaspar Fernández in Viceregal Mexico was developed in close collaboration with Sebastián León and Giulia Genini, artistic directors of La Boz Galana and Concerto Scirocco, and musicologist Ireri E. Chávez Bárcenas. Combining original scholarship with historically informed performance, the album offers a major contribution to the study and performance of early Latin American music.
Scheduled for release in October 2026 on Outhere Music, the album will appear in the new Latin American series Fuga Latina as its first release devoted to the viceregal period.
The album accompanies Chávez Bárcenas’s forthcoming book, Sounding Race, Identity, and Devotion in Puebla de los Ángeles (Oxford University Press, in press), offering fresh insight into the cultural diversity, devotion, and cross-cultural exchange of the seventeenth-century Spanish-speaking world.
